What the data shows
For most students a bachelor's degree is a good investment: the typical college pays back its full four-year net price in about 2.9 years of higher earnings in our analysis. Price drives most of the difference between colleges, which is why low-cost public universities dominate the fastest-payback list.
Payback is not guaranteed. At a meaningful share of colleges, former students earn no more than the typical high school graduate, and at the slowest schools a high net price combines with modest earnings to stretch payback past a decade.
Methodology
College payback = (average annual net price × 4) ÷ (median earnings 10 years after entry − Census ACS 2024 median earnings for high school graduates 25+, $40,153). Net price is the Scorecard average after grants and scholarships. Colleges are bachelor's-predominant institutions with 500+ undergraduates. Group figures are medians across institutions weighted by undergraduate enrollment, so a large community college counts more than a small one.
Major payback = median federal debt at completion ÷ (year-5 median earnings − the same high school median), from the Scorecard field-of-study file. The ACS benchmark covers workers of all ages, so it is a demanding comparison for recent graduates.
Payback ignores taxes, interest, and forgone earnings while in school, and treats the earnings premium as constant.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a bachelor's degree to pay off?
About 2.9 years at the typical college in our analysis, counting four years of net price against the extra earnings graduates make over high school graduates.
Does a public or private college pay back faster?
Public universities pay back in 2.6 years at the median versus 3.7 years for private nonprofits, mainly because they cost less after grants.
Which majors pay back student debt fastest?
Petroleum Engineering and Computer Science repay their median federal debt fastest, in under 0.3 years of their year-5 earnings premium.
Does every bachelor's degree pay off?
No. At 4.0% of the colleges we analyzed, former students' median earnings 10 years after entry do not exceed the high school median of $40,153.
Why not include lost wages while in school?
Many students work while enrolled, and the earnings data already reflect graduates' real outcomes. Adding four years of forgone high school wages would lengthen every payback period, so treat these figures as a lower bound.
