Enrollment-weighted medians among public 4-year colleges that bill required fees separately. Colleges reporting $0 in fees, which usually fold them into tuition, are counted in the last column and left out of the medians.
What the data shows
Tuition gets the headlines, but it is not the whole bill. Mandatory fees for technology, recreation, health centers, and athletics add $1,755 a year at the typical public university in our analysis, and they are often left out of tuition comparisons.
Fees matter most at public colleges, where states cap tuition increases but not always fees. When you compare colleges, use the full cost of attendance or, better, the net price after grants, not tuition alone.
Methodology
Charges come from the IPEDS Institutional Characteristics academic-year file (IC2023_AY): published 2023-24 tuition, required fees, books and supplies, on-campus housing and food, and other expenses for full-time, first-time undergraduates. Public colleges use in-state (or in-district) rates. Group figures are medians across institutions weighted by undergraduate enrollment, so a large community college counts more than a small one.
Institution type and enrollment come from College Scorecard, matched by IPEDS unit ID. Programs that report charges by program rather than by academic year (many short trade programs) are not in this file.
