Executive Summary

EDsmart Data’s prestige score ranks bachelor’s-predominant campuses in our prestige cohort—schools that clear published selectivity, completion, and earnings-reporting thresholds (see definition below). Within that cohort we weight selectivity 40%, completion 30%, and eight-year earnings 30%, and display the result as a 0–100% score. This is our illustrative proxy for brand-tier lists, not a federal classification or a reputation survey. Massachusetts Institute of Technology leads this list at 95.0% (Prestige score).

What we mean by prestigious colleges

On this page, prestigious is an EDsmart Data analysis label—not an official College Scorecard, IPEDS, Carnegie, or U.S. News designation. We use it as shorthand for campuses that meet a transparent, high bar on admissions selectivity, undergraduate completion, and reported post-enrollment earnings. We do not treat “elite” as a formal category; when we say prestige cohort, we mean only the schools that clear the eligibility rules below.

Prestige cohort eligibility

A campus enters the cohort only if all of the following hold in our Scorecard extract:

Bachelor’s-predominant four-year institution
Undergraduate enrollment ≥ 400
Overall admission rate ≤ 20%
Completion within 150% of normal time ≥ 70%
Reported median earnings eight years after entry

How the prestige score is calculated

Among schools in the cohort, we convert each input to a percentile rank within the cohort and combine:

40% selectivity — percentile of (1 − admission rate); when mean SAT is also reported, we blend that with our admission–SAT selectivity score
30% completion — percentile of the 150% graduation rate
30% earnings — percentile of median earnings eight years after entry

We publish the composite as a 0–100% prestige score (for example, 0.950 → 95.0%). Higher scores mean stronger relative standing inside this selective cohort—not a claim of overall educational quality, social prestige, or fit for every student.

Underlying institution file: EDsmart Data processed College Scorecard extract merged to the IPEDS 2024 directory for HBCU and Carnegie fields.
Cohort applied on this page: sorted highest first on Prestige score; 62 campuses met every filter and the top 50 are published.
Ties on the ranked metric are broken by enrollment, then institution name, so ranks stay stable between rebuilds.
ROI column matches the processed college_roi_rankings series in this site build; see College Scorecard ROI methodology.
How the 10-year ROI figure is built: median earnings reported 6, 8, and 10 years after entry (years 7 and 9 linearly interpolated) are summed across years 6–10, then average annual net price × typical years enrolled (five for bachelor’s-predominant campuses) is subtracted. It is a nominal-dollar gap—not discounted to present value, and it does not subtract earnings foregone while enrolled or compare against a no-college baseline. Campuses reporting only one of the three earnings years are excluded from these tables.
School profile links use generated slugs; not every campus has a published profile page yet—use the Scorecard site as fallback.
Prestigious and prestige cohort are EDsmart Data editorial definitions for this ranking; they are not proprietary third-party indices and are not federal taxonomy codes.
Eligibility: bachelor’s-predominant; enrollment ≥ 400; admission rate ≤ 20%; 150% completion ≥ 70%; eight-year median earnings reported.
Score weights inside the cohort: selectivity 40%, completion 30%, eight-year earnings 30% (percentile ranks within the cohort). Displayed as a 0–100% prestige score.
Missing SAT does not exclude a campus if admission rate and the other cohort rules are met; the selectivity leg then relies on admission rate alone.
