What Opportunity Colleges and Universities measure

Traditional college lists often reward selectivity and brand. The Carnegie Opportunity College and University designation flips that lens toward outcomes that matter for most families: access (Pell and underrepresented students relative to the school’s service area) and earnings (how former students’ wages compare with peers in the labor markets they enter).

Institutions that clear both “higher access” and “higher earnings” thresholds receive the OCU label. ACE and the Carnegie Foundation report 478 such campuses spanning community colleges, regional publics, private nonprofits, special-focus schools, and research universities—from Santa Fe College and Tohono O’odham Community College to Arizona State, Spelman, Texas A&M, and the University of Illinois Chicago.
